How did you get to be driving along Trail Ridge Rd in Colorado with the then
President (Reagan)? If he used this as an example he must have been there
too? Though I am lost at how a marmot in a hole in 1981 is relevant to an
osprey and a recent fire.
When it comes to people at all levels of Government (both elected and
non-elected) in Australia, we need to be able to pick what battles are
relevant and what we can do and define them seriously and precisely. There
are more than enough serious issues in conservation and politics.

This calls to mind an incident in the US in 1981. We were driving along
Trail Ridge Rd in Colorado and straddled a pothole. As we did so a marmot
poked its head out of the hole and ducked down again. About 2 weeks later
the then President (Reagan) used this as an example to justify further cuts
to the Parks Service in terms of along the lines of "they aren't using the
money we give them wisely, so why give them more".
I am quite sure there are people at all levels of Government (both elected
and non-elected) in Australia who still think that way.
