Hi Paul & Ruth, It is a bit out of the way from Hamilton but the Hopuruahine River, beside the Waikaremoana Rd just before you get to Lake Waikaremoana is a good spot for Blue Duck. This is the only place I've seen Blue Duck while still in the car - usually it takes a fair amount of walking to get onto them. The road is very slow & winding after Murupara so reaching this spot in Te Urawera NP would probably require an overnight stop. Spectacular scenery, particularly around the lake, make the drive worthwhile.
