Greg sent this message to B-A and mentioned about me, "for the reasons that
he gave" but I did not send that message to B-A, only to those directly
involved. So given that now missing link, now to complete the circle, in
case anyone is interested, here is what I sent earlier:
Certainly not any raptor, none has that pattern and would have a different
shape, not so long and loose looking. As for the Koel (female or juvenile),
I wondered for a moment but the barring pattern of their tail feathers is
alternating, light and dark brown bars of similar width, not like this
feather. The Coucal however shows the pattern of mainly black or at least
very dark, with narrower whitish wavy bars. The coucal does not have a
target nesting birds/spp and besides birds move around. As for pheasant,
well really unlikely, apart from just how would it get there. As far as I
know, their tail feathers are much more ornamental in shape, they are
generally pointy ended, not broad to the tip and they are uneven, one side
is wider than the other.
As for the feather being somewhat removed from typical habitat, not such a
big deal, I think we often underestimate how mobile birds can be, also
feathers can be moved along by wind and water and vehicles and people......

I sent the below reply at 10:28 PM on January 21 and it just came through at
2 PM today. I stick by my ID and agree with Philip that it is not a Koel
for the reasons that he gave. If it is not a Pheasant Coucal, however I
believe that it is, then it is a domestic bird of some sort.

It's a Pheasant Coucal tail feather.

Whose feather is this, do you think? Note that it was found on a vehicle
track enmeshed in bark & sticks, so was perhaps carried into the
habitat-patch by a child - at 500m SEQ open montane heathy woodland, few
birds ever present...
