Hi Peter,

I think it’s because drinking provides some lubrication and stimulates the bird 
to disgorge the pellet. I don’t think they purposely place it in the water but 
that’s where it often lands when they’re having a drink. You may also notice a 
concentration of weeds under the birdbath from all the seeds landing here.
