Attention race fans! The provisional results for the Victorian Twitchathon
are in!
Following on from the previous weekends race, the Melbourne Cup, here are
the provisional results for Victoria’s main sporting race, the Victorian
Twitchathon.
Overall 10 teams participated this year. 7 in the 12 hr race, including 1
junior team. 2 teams in the 24 hr race, 1 adult team and 1 junior team. 1
team in the Birdathon. In terms of teams, Bendigo had a great year - with 3
teams originating from around that wonderful inland city. It must be the
spring rains!
RESULTS
In the 12 HOUR RACE, the Phaps Around The Traps are the Victorian
champions! They saw an impressive 168 bird species! Congratulations Matthew
and Mick. Second was the Manky Shearwaters with a very respectable 159
species. The Kookayebrothers were the inaugural 12 hr Junior Victorian
champions! Well done Adam, Liam, Samuel and Stephen! Brilliant stuff!
In the 24 HOUR RACE, Those Binocular Boys are the Victorian 24 hr
champions! Congratulations Brett, Daniel and Bob! While The Barking Owlets
are the 24 hr junior champions! Well done Finn, Silas, Casper and John!
Again, brilliant stuff!
In Victoria, one team participated in the BIRDATHON, the Barwon Catbirds
and they are the inaugural Victorian champions! Good on ya Craig, John,
Barry and David!
BEST BIRD AND WORST DIP
There were some interesting species nominated as best bird. These included
Red-necked Phalarope, Great Knot, Brolga, Painted Button-quail, Leaden and
Satin Flycatcher, Wonga Pigeon, Australian Ringneck, Singing Bushlark,
Superb Lyrebird, Bassian Thrush and Southern Emu-wren.
In regards to the winner of the best bird competition, although the
Red-necked Phalarope is an exciting arctic vagrant, in terms of trickiness
to see, I think Painted Button-quail is the winner. Well done to Those
Binocular Boys - I hear it was a life tick for at least one member of the
team.
In terms of the "winner" of the worst dip competition there was, of course,
a complete lack of waterbirds around Victoria. But, as compensation, the
was lots of mosquitoes! Both these things put pressure on teams to
perform. Worst dips included Eurasian Coot, Hoary-headed Grebe, no
Spoonbills, Great Egret, Chestnut Teal, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Australasian
Gannet, Grey Butcherbird, Eastern Spinebill, Silvereye and White-browed
Babbler.
All of the above are bad dips, but if I had to choose one it would be the
White-browed Babbler. Why? Because if you are going to call yourself the
Bendigo Babblers you should at least see your namesake! ;-)
The headline tomorrow in the Bendigo Advertiser will be "Bendigo Babblers
dipped on White-browed Babbler" - followed by the subheading "But Clinton
dumps Trump".
SPONSORSHIP
In terms of funds raised in the 2016 Victorian Twitchathon, the results
were brilliant! Overall (so far) we have raised a massive $2,811.06* for
shorebird conservation! See https://www.justgiving.com/fun
draising/VictorianTwitchathon. *Note: this is the combine totals of the
Victorian Twitchathon and The Barking Owlets justgiving fundraising sites
(see below).
In terms of individual fundraising, the Barking Owlets were winners - so
far the team has raised a massive $700.06! (See
https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Barking-Owlets). (It's worth
mentioning that that 6 cents will make all the difference to some small
sandpiper on it's way to Siberia.) However a special mention also needs to
go to the KooKayeBrothers. They have raised at least $475! (Probably more.)
Both these teams are junior teams, and both have put the adult teams to
great shame! The Barking Owlets and the KooKayeBrothers are the clear
winners of this weekends race!
Thanks everyone for your participating, and thanks to all the people who
sponsored the event. All the money raised will be directed to shorebird
conservation. The results will be incorporated into the national results,
and these will be released soon. It looks as though, in Victoria anyway,
the new 12 hour format is a great success! I look forward to competing in
it next year!
Cheers, Tim Dolby
