There have been apps for a long time that are able to identify songs by
"listening" and analysing so the technology well and truly exists. The
issues are around data (recordings). With songs there is no shortage of
versions of the song that can be compared against, and there is no shortage
of duration of music - if you've ever used "Shazam" you will know that some
songs are identified almost immediately, whereas some songs take a
considerable amount of time (up to about a minute) before the app can
identify it. Obviously background noise can make this more difficult. The
significant problem with bird calls is the lack of recordings available to
be used for call matching. I am assuming that the developers of the app have
not been travelling from country to country with recording gear (otherwise
the app would cost ever so slightly more than $5.99), so they must be using
public domain or royalty-free licenced recordings - presumably sourced from
xeno-canto or similar. Whilst there is probably no shortage of calls
available for the more common species, the less common ones will have very
few calls publically available.
As Neil says, provision of feedback to the app developers and, presumably,
the making available of calls for comparison purposes, would greatly benefit
the enhancement of the app.

Subject: Birdsong app
It claims to identify 25 species, but it looks like there are about 125 in
the app, so perhaps they have added some more recently.
Automatic recognition is undergoing ongoing refinement, so I think it is
worth experimenting with and providing feedback so that they can improve it.
As others have noted, the interface could be simplified, but that is not a
major concern at the moment.
