Hi Penny,
see Tom Dolby's site (or his excellent book w/ Rohan Clarke), especially
his comments on Chiltern. Try the various top few hits on google under
"tim dolby chiltern". If driving to Bendigo from Sydney you will pass v
close to Chiltern/Mt Pilot which is just beyond Albury over the border,
either side of Hume Fwy. He describes it as the possibly "Australia's
best winter forest".
If a diversion a bit north is possible then the area near Barmah /
Terrick-terrick has good birding too. There is a free pdf available
online somewhere, possibly here:
http://users.mcmedia.com.au/~stocky/birding_spots.html
Holds a range of drier country species than Chlitern including Superb
Parrot.
Cheers, Ian
