Another option to carry as a 2nd book Ber Van Perlo's "Birds of Mexico and
Central America".  Its no subsitute for the wonderful Howell and Webb -
its a much smaller book with small simple illustrations & brief text,
but it does illustrate the US birds, e.g. wood-warblers, which Howell &
Webb omit.  Its size is also  convenient for carrying during non-birding
activities.
