In just over half the time it would take to get to the Capertee you could visit
Belmont Lagoon, between Lake Macquarie and Blacksmiths Beach. Striped HEs are
common here, as they are in many coastal areas in the Hunter/Central Coast
where Swamp She-oaks occur (e.g. the Hunter Wetlands Centre is another good
spot). Even closer than Belmont they are found on the shores of the Tuggerah
Lakes system on the Central Coast, again where Swamp She-oaks occur, (e.g.
Wyong / Chittaway Point) though I don't have detailed knowledge of those areas.
They're also in the Cessnock woodlands, though are not common here, becoming
more common the further west you go up the Hunter Valley (eventually to
habitats similar to the Capertee).

Hi Martin,
One of the closest places to Sydney for Striped Honeyeater is the Capertee
Valley. They’re reasonably common there in many of the well-treed roadside
areas. Pick up a "Capertee Valley Map and Guide to Birdwatching” leaflet from
Lithgow tourist info or Capertee store and try sites 4, 6 and 11 which are all
good for Striped. You can also download the leaflet from here:
http://caperteevalleyalliance.blogspot.com.au/and click the stylised Regent
Honeyeater.
Cheers,
Carol
