Dear all - here is a comment from Steve Debus: Hi Shirley, All sounds normal for the pre-laying phase to me. Raptors mate a lot (several times a day) in the weeks leading up to laying. There's lots of literature on it; I've described it too for a few species that I've watched closely (the 3 eagle species, Square-tailed Kite, Sparrowhawk etc.), including now Black Falcons I'm watching at Tamworth - they've been mating daily for maybe a month and I think laying is still a fortnight away. I'll leave readers to look up the Greek meaning of the Red Goshawk's generic name; a euphemistic translation is 'very lecherous'. Cheers, Steve |
