G’day Everyone,
I went down to North Lake this morning for an hour or so before the rain came
with no joy.
There were Black-fronted Dotterels, Red-kneed Dotterels, Wood Sandpipers and
Sharp-tailed Sandpipers about, as well as the usual Crakes but no sign of the
Snipe.
I saw Mark down there checking things out so hopefully he may have something
positive to report.
I also ran into Peter Valentine as he was getting back to his car at Bibra Lake
and he’d checked out the Bird Hide this morning with no luck too.
Weather was overcast with some sunny breaks but there was still plenty of storm
activity in the distance and it was a very stormy night SOR so this may have
impacted the birds activity/patterns.
Will possibly try again tomorrow morning, weather permitting.
Cheers,
Ross

I was going to head down to the bird hide at Bibra Lake again on Tuesday
morning.
I’m wondering (hoping) that it’s 7am departure means it was going to Bibra Lake
to it’s “usual” spot.
I’m happy to sms/call anyone who’s going to be about looking tomorrow morning
if I spot it there.
Cheers,
Ross

Hi all,
The snipe was seen by Mark Binns this morning at North Lake around 7am on the
west side of the wetland on the edge of the small pond separate from the main
lake - however, it had flown off before the observer left. Since North Lake is
just over the road from Bibra Lake, it is presumably the same bird
Cheers,
John

Subject: [birdswa] Gallinago sp Snipe at Bibra Lake, Perth
Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2015 19:32:07 +0800
Hi all,
Heather Thorning photographed a Gallinago sp. Snipe at Bibra Lake this morning,
just north of the new bird hide in the NE of the lake (seen from the hide I
believe). Several people failed to see it during the day, but Plaxy Barratt,
Dan Mantle and Paul Newman have reported it showing again this arvo around
6.15pm, though I get the impression views were relatively distant.
Obviously this group is a challenge to ID in the field, but any Gallinago is
unusual in the south-west
Cheers,
John
