My understanding is that "Field Guide to the birds of New Zealand" by
Barrie Heather, Hugh Robertson and Derek Onley is about the only game in
town.
If you want to see the Royal Albatross I believe the boat cruise from the
city is a lot better value than going out to the visitors centre (the drive
out is pretty spectacular and so are the charges).
