G'day fellow list members
While eating my Sorghum gluten-free Weetbix the day before birding-
aus crashed, I got to wondering whether the large numbers of Brolgas
we have been seeing on harvested Sorghum paddocks were there for
Sorghum grain or for invertebrates &/or vertebrates. Because they
appear to remain on the paddocks for some time I suspect they are not
eating either vertebrates or invertebrates that have survived the
harvesting; but rather might be there for the grain that survived the
harvesting.
I checked the Handbook of the Birds of the World (HBW) and it says
that while the Brolga's main food item is sedge tubers it and the
Sarus Crane also eat cereal grains from cultivated crops. So I
looked on my cereal packet and see the Sorghum is not only 10.8%
protein but also has high levels of Vit B1, B2, B3, Potassium, Iron &
Magnesium.
And I thought their bills would have been too large to forage on such
small items. never too late to learn.
Cheers & Happy birding
Mike
