Hi Michael
Our two resident magpies attack our Crested Pigeons every year,
especially during the winter months when 'mother' magpie is nesting.
Dad magpie swoops in on the pigeons from the height of our pine tree
and has often killed in the same why you describe .. attacking the
back of the head.
