I usually use the Fat Birder as my first reference when considering a trip to
somewhere I know nothing about.

I have heard that the birding can be very good in the Middle East, with a mix
of Asian and African birds.

I reckon it is generally safe to use the terms interchangeably (if not strictly
correct). The people who made the distinction between the species and
individuals are probably on the money. It is also a question of scale
(Victoria versus my back yard for instance). Golden Whistlers are residents in
Victoria but not in my yard. Grey Fantails are residents in Victoria and my
yard but not sedentary. New Holland Honeyeaters are resident and sedentary in
my yard.
