Hi Carl,
The point is not 'extinct' versus 'not extinct' (as in the Schrödinger's
bird) it is actually 'species' versus 'not species'. E.g., if you split
Kokako into NI and SI Kokako then you have an extinct species more than if
you lump Kokako as one species. In other words, the more you split the
higher will be the number of both living and extinct species.
