Birdline Central & Southern Queensland

Published sightings for the week ending 4 May 2014.

Sat 3 May Wandering Tattler (2); Sooty Oystercatcher (2); Osprey Alexandra Headlands, Sunshine Coast
2 Wandering Tattlers seen well on the rocks just south of the surf club, one foraging alongside the pair of Oystercatchers. The Tattlers were quite flighty; not surprising given the number of people walking their dogs along the rocks. Eventually the birds flew south.
Elliot Leach

Yellow-billed Spoonbill Dowse Lagoon, Sandgate
Single bird resting on the western bank at 4 pm today, best viewed from the Southerden St platform. This is the first I've seen here.
Ged Tranter

White Wagtail - ssp. leucopsis Moreton Island
White Wagtail seen this morning by Melinda Laidlaw at the northern end of eastern beach. I have no other information but will try and find out more tonight. Apologies for the image quality but it is all I have [Ed. From this photo it would appear to be a leucopsis-RPM]
Terry Reis

Fri 2 May Shining Flycatcher Maroochy River
5 birds, 1 pair and 3 singles
Greg Roberts

Thu 1 May Yellow Chat Bajool-Port Alma Road
1 male & 2 female approx 300 m before salt works

Wed 30 Apr Buff-banded Rail Gold Coast Airport
I am a Sydney based birder and was surprised to see a Buff-banded Rail at the southern end of Gold Coast Airport (at the smoking section) being fed by airport staff. Very tame bird. Suspect this bird is known to many QLD birders. Photo attached.
Charles Hunter

Square-tailed Kite Parklands Reserve, Bli Bli
1 bird

Wandering Tattler Alexandra Headlands, Sunshine Coast
Two birds seen at close range, heavily barred (?breeding plumage), ID confirmed by one calling in flight. Second bird has injured right foot (at times facing backwards rather than forwards) but able to hop and feed.

Four Cotton Pygmy Geese were sighted on a dam along Coles Road as well as a pair of Whistling Kites
