Kukila Volume 17, No. 2 is published!
Enormous flocks of Eyebrowed Thrushes have recently been
discovered wintering in South Sumatra, but local villagers shoot up to
500 for the pot in a single night.
This is the topic of a short communication in the latest issue (Volume 17,
Part 2) of Kukila,
the journal of Indonesian ornithology. Covering one of the most
biodiverse regions on the Earth and the country with the greatest number
of threatened bird species, Kukila is now almost 30 years old.
This
issue includes full length articles on the dynamics of the waterbirds
of East Kalimantan’s Middle Mahakan wetlands, understorey birds of
Sarawak’s Gunung Gading National Park, and additions to the avifauna of
Bintan and Batam Islands in the Riau Archipelago, just south of
Singapore.
Short communications include the first national or
island records of Eurasian Hobby, Pectoral Sandpiper and Ruff, and
observations of the Sunda Coucal’s diet.
Our special section
‘Around the Archipelago’ is another bumper with over 23 pages of records
and photos of new or unusual island or provincial records. This is
followed by a review of the recently published Special Volume and Index
of the Handbook of the birds of the World, and its relevance to
Indonesian ornithology.
Kukila is biannual, and the
next issue is expected to appear in September 2014. All issues to date
are available for downloading on our website. We welcome articles and
new distributional records of Indonesian birds from ornithologists,
birdwatchers and tour guides.
All submissions to Kukila will also now be managed online. If you are
interested to submit an article, click here for more details.
