Ken Cross, Steve McBride and myself located another Painted Snipe yesterday about 20 km from where one was reported at Cove Rd, Stanmore on Mon. It was found in a backwater bay of the Stanley River at Royston, viewed from opposite 1143 Villenevue Rd. A telescope is essential to view the bird which was on the left-hand side of the left-hand bay. (NB the house is signed as 143, but 1143 is the correct address as checked on Google Maps). As we couldn't then locate the Cove Rd bird, it's possible it has relocated as there didn't appear to be sufficient cover at the Cove Rd site due to a rapid drying-out of the wetland. Four Latham's Snipe appeared happy enough however.
