Whilst researching an old record for a friend I came across an article by
Arnold McGill, 'Records, Reminiscences and Reflections' in 'The Bird Observer',
June 1980, No. 582. He was bemoaning the diversion of the direct sewage outfall
at the Malabar headland south of Sydney into a treatment plant on the 'excuse'
that that would avert unwanted pollution of local beaches. He states that "On 1
September 1957, eleven oceanic wanderers were recorded including 387 Wandering,
48 Black-browed & 3 White-capped Albatrosses, 93 Giant Petrels (no doubt both
species), 40 Fluttering Shearwaters, 16 Wedge-tailed Shearwaters and 34 Prions,
not close enough to work out species although Fairy was clearly detected. My
largest count of Wandering Albatrosses there on any one visit was 548".
