Sat 31 Aug Red Goshawk Kairi District
As part of Cairns Festival week, the Cairns Bird Club holds a 24 hour competitive bird count. The area surveyed is within one days reach of Cairns, commonly Port Douglas to Innisfail, coastal and west to the Atherton Tablelands. This list represents 1 team of 3 observers. Red Goshawk The Atherton Tablelands is currently very active with raptors. Approximately 5 kilometers east of Tolga, we stopped to observe a Spotted Harrier over pasture. A tower of raptors was then spotted nearby. At the top, a Wedge-tailed Eagle, then lower down a Brown Goshawk, a Brown Falcon, 10 + Black Kite, and a single Red Goshawk. Within 10 minutes travel, the two Black Falcons were located in a loose aggregation of Black Kite.

Fri 30 Aug Freckled Duck (6) Hasties Swamp National Park
Now six birds near hide, including one apparently young bird with paler and browner colour, especially on underparts.

Thu 29 Aug Black Falcon Brady Road Swamp, Mareeba
Two Black Falcon perched and then cruising over a grass fire, which also attracted many kites.

Sat 17 Aug Black Falcon Mehmet Rd, Kairi, Atherton Tablelands
Two Black Falcon in the air above a freshly-cut hay paddock, with 15 Brown Falcon also present, mainly perched on hay bales. The Black Falcon were harassing each other and the many Black Kite also in the air.
