Hi all
I enjoyed watching a couple of groups of Hooded Plover late yesterday at
13th Beach. There were four birds in one group, one of them a juvenile with
very faint cap. The other group had two birds - another observer reported 7
in total with two juv - so perhaps this more distant group had a juvenile
with them, but I couldn't see it.
The tide was very high, and there were several hundred Silver Gulls, dozens
of Welcome Swallows, Red-capped and Double-Banded Plover, and even a few
Willie Wagtails and White-fronted Chats foraging actively just below the
tideline. There was very little beach left. It was very frustrating to see
a couple walking a large black dog straight through the birds on what
little was left of the beach - less than a meter in places. I pointed to
the sign that said "No Dogs" but just got a sneer and off they went. At
least they kept the dog leashed for most of the walk, and until they were
well past the birds.
