I have found iBird UK to be very useful - paintings, photos, calls, range and 
similar to options.

Also BirdsUK is a nice little app that has a range of common birds, but what I 
found useful was its Quiz option where random photos are shown and you have to 
identify. Good to practice id skills.

These are iPhone apps - not sure about other devices.
