The only location in the Indian Ocean where Herald Petrel is known to breed
is on Round Island
off Mauritius. There is a small population of about 20 pairs (V. Tatayah
pers. comm.). One bird found on Round Island in April 2006 was banded on Raine
Island, Queensland in July 1984. I do not know whether or not Herald Petrels
hybridise with Trindade Petrels or Kermedec Petrels on Round Island.
Incidentally, I think there is only one 'i' in 'Trindade', the Portuguese for
Trinity. The Spanish spelling is 'Trinidad' with two 'i's but no 'e'. However,
the island where they breed in the Atlantic is a territory of Brazil (not
Trinidad in the Caribbean) and naturally takes the Portuguese spelling.
'Trinidade Petrel' is frequently used in English language seabird guides and
checklists but is surely a misnomer in any language.
