I was down on the Granite Belt over the weekend to purchase some wine
from a Land for Wildlife establishment (Lucas Estate at Severnlea -
they have a Variegated Fairy-wren on their label - I enjoyed listening
to Mistletoebirds and watching the passing raptors while pondering my
purchases over a Baked Ricotta with Spiced Shiraz Jus accompanied by a
2006 Chardonnay).
I was packing the car at my accommodation (a 100 year old school house
at Ballandean surrounded by farmland and remnant vegetation) this
morning (while the frost was melting) when first a family of Grey-
crowned Babblers and then a group of Apostlebirds dropped in. When I
say that the Apostlebirds were tame, one walked within 5 cm of my
shoe. Given that the caretaker lives offsite and the place would
average less than one group of visitors per week, the birds would not
have frequent contact with people. I rather doubt that anyone feeds
them.
Are Apostlebirds normally this tame?
As an aside, I also enjoyed some nice views of Plum-headed Finches
making the most of the brambles along a fenceline on the property.
Regards, Laurie.
