Chris,I agree about the bamboo, it's roots will be out the drain holes looking to take over the world in no time. I would stay away from wattles, they can get very leggy if not tip pruned, unless you go to a specialised nursery and find some of the low growing varieties.. Bottlebrushes are fairly bullet proof and if you want good screening some of the dwarf lily-pillies are hard to go past, they need bit more water but can easily be trained into a hedge. Probably be good to select some of the lower growing bottlebrushes and tea trees if you went that way, some varities can get very large.
