Hi John,
Looking at that bird and the lack of dark black stripe along the neck and
brownish tinges to the upperwing etc I would suggest that it is an immature
bird.
As far as Australian records are concerned, it appears on the 'Supplementary
List' for Christmas Island and used to appear in the 'Supplementary List' for
Australia (though has been removed in the latest version from David James). I
assume for the same reason, it was also on an older version of the BARC review
list.
If my memory serves me correctly, it was actually Phoebe Snetsinger who made
the Christmas Island sighting but it was never confirmed.... or am I imagining
this!?
Mick

Subject: Belated - PURPLE HERON at Herdsman Lake, Perth
Hi all, See here - http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=255028 Unless the
observer has mistaken the location of the photo (which seems unlikely as he's
checked after it was asked), there was a Purple Heron at Herdsman Lake in late
February. Needless to say I've heard nothing of it being seen since (I was at
the lake the day after the photos were taken!!). I think this would be a first
for Aus? Cheers,John
