Just to add to Alan's email to Bob (and for info of others who may be
interested), the best place for seawatching is probably Fort Drive, which is
the road situated between the Shortland Esplanade and Fort Scratchely. The
advantages of here are that it is slightly elevated but still close to the tide
line and there is oodles of parking space - in rainy weather one can actually
set up the scope in a parked vehicle! It can be found by typing "Fort Drive"
into Google Maps.
There has been a Black Noddy seen from here regularly over the past few days
(still there yesterday, mostly off the Newcastle Baths) and during the
exceptional weather on Saturday I saw at least one, possibly >10 Great-winged
Petrel(s) amongst the more common seabirds.

Subject: RFI Birding Around Newcastle
Hi All
I am going to be in Newcastle on Labour Day (11th March) and wish to do some
birding.
Can anyone suggest some good spots around the area please. Possibly
including places to see off shore birds as there seem to be a lot of good
things about at the moment. (only have binos though)
I will have a car, (small to medium rental) and don't mind driving a bit.
If there are any birders going out around that area and don't mind someone
tacking along that would be even better. (my car and petrol)
If anyone can help, please contact me direct on this email address and also
please cc my private email (as cc'd above)
Cheers
Bob
