Birdline Australian Capital Territory

Published sightings for the week ending 24 Feb 2013.

Fri 22 Feb Black-eared Cuckoo Mt Majura
Uncorroborated report passed on by G Dabb of a Black-eared Cuckoo on Mt Majura. See http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/archives/html/canberrabirds/2013-02/msg00315.html
Terry Gourlay

Blue-winged Parrot Campbell Park
A juvenile Blue-winged Parrot was observed this morning. Bird was observed perched and flying, calling continuously while in flight. Originally misidentified as a juvenile/immature Turquoise Parrot, but on review of HANZAB, the lack of blue in face and overall dull olive green colour and dull yellow breast and belly indicates Blue-winged. Bird later observed by Scott Ryan.

Thu 21 Feb Azure Kingfisher Kellys Swamp, Jerrabomberra Wetlands
While scanning the river bank opposite to Fulica hide, I spied an Azure Kingfisher perching on a cluster of branches lying vertically above the creek. It was showing its magnificent blue back to us. It then flew across the surface of the water, appearing to "skip" across the top like a stone, before perching again to show us its bright orange belly. This was between 8:00 and 8:15. [Moderator comment: Poor quality photograph certainly appears to show Azure. A number of people followed up this report on Friday 22 Feb, but unfortunately no bird was found]

Wed 20 Feb Spotted Harrier Mulligans Flat big dam
Spotted Harrier (1) Single bird flying over the big dam. Long wings, slightly upswept with broad fingered 'hands'. Grey overwing, chestnut underwing spotted with white , distinct lack of white rump.

Mon 18 Feb White-bellied Sea-eagle Wanniassa
A juvenile sea-eagle flew over the suburb at 6.30pm. seen by 2 members of the Canberra Ornithologists Group who live a few hundred meters apart in same suburb. Not a rare bird, but extremely uncommon over the suburbs.
