We know there is a decline. We know where the migration routes and feeding
grounds are. Banding has done its job it that respect. Are we going to keep
banding Red Knot when there are a dozen birds left in the wild? Enthusiastic
amateurs indulging their hobby of banding birds in the name of science might be
spending their time more profitably campaigning to save the Cheetham Saltworks
from development, for example.
