Hello Andrew, If you look at my website under Black-headed Honeyeater you'll find a picture (584208D) of a bird collecting an old cigarette butt - this one is a fairly weathered filter tip and I doubt very much whether there would be much residual nicotine. To my mind the attraction in this case is simply the fibrous nature of the material.
