Hi James,
First: Buy the book 'Where to See Birds in Victoria'. It is a great
resource for the Victorian birder. (
http://www.allenandunwin.com/default.aspx?page=94&book=9781741757361)
Second: Join Eremaea Birds (www.eremaea.com). Many of the well known
Victorian birders post their sightings and lists here, and it will give you
a good indication of where to go and when. You can also setup email alerts
for when particular species are seen.
Third: Consider a day or two with a reputable birding guide. It's a great
investment in knowledge and birding skills. I highly recommend Steve
Davidson (http://www.themelbournebirder.com) and Simon Starr (
http://www.firetailbirdwatchingtours.com)
