No one is going to create a sandy beach by dumping mud=dredging spoil on
top of the mud that is already there, and if they tried and did not
create a wall around it it would just slide back into the channel they
have just dredged - this is just a furphy - there was assertive local
opposition about 30 years ago when developers wanted to build islands
out on the mudflats - I am sure this would happen again if the dredge
spoil was destined to be dumped there - don't get your heart rate up by
getting worried about it, it is not going to happen

Dear Mr Mayor
I hear with some alarm that there is a proposal to dump dredging spoil on the flats in
front of the Esplanade to create an artificial "beach".
There are beautiful beaches just 10 minutes drive to the north at Holloways,
Yorkey's Knob, etc., making it difficult to understand
the need for a reclaimed environment that will revert to tidal flats and
mangroves without constant maintenance and its consequent cost to ratepayers.
I wonder whether consideration has been given to the revenue loss to local
businesses from visitors?
Every visitor to the Wet Tropics interested in birds makes the Cairns Esplanade a
"must" for the visiting migratory shorebirds that rely on that environment, as
well as the mangroves and boardwalk at the northern end?
Over 150 bird species have been seen at this unique spot ("Easily the best place to
observe shorebirds (waders) in comfort from a park bench within the city.")
When I visit Cairns (I first visited in 1973) I stay at Rydges, Holiday Inn or
Pacific International because they are on the Esplanade!
It will be disappointing to say the least if this development takes away a
world class destination for bird watchers!
