Birdline Northern Territory

Published sightings for the week ending 15 Jul 2012.

Tue 10 Jul Hooded Parrots Edith Falls Road
Five birds came to dead tree above water at 1730. Rested for five minutes before heading off. Pick your spot early as this site (5.1 k's off hwy) is a 'free camp' site and by 1745 there were another seven loads of free campers.

Mon 9 Jul Chestnut Rail, Mangrove Grey Fantail Stoddart Drive, off Tger Brennan Drive, Darwin
Single Rail seen just before sunrise (approx 7am) on edge of mangroves about 1/2 way along path - just before reaching the big outlet pipe. (Tide was rising at time, approx 2 1/4 hours before full tide; also suspect may have to be here before any dogs go past on the rather busy footpath). Party of 4 fantails seen deeper in mangroves but squeaked much closer to edge. Much smaller and different calls to grey fantails seen elsewhere. Also a pair of Black Butcherbirds here and a small group of Yellow White Eye. Heard a Mangrove Robin calling but it wouldn't respond/come closer.

Sun 8 Jul Rainbow Pitta, possible Yellow-rumped Mannikins & Zitting Cisticola Fogg Dam
Rainbow Pitta seen on the Woodland to Waterlilies walk foraging at base of cabbage tree palms just before track turns right to head for wetland. Horsfields Bronze Cuckoo, Arafura Fantail and Grey Whistlers seen well in the small trees on edge of wetland. Mannikins seen in grass at far end of dam wall on left hand (side with the "high" water) side (brown back, with noticeably contrasting pale grey head and pale tails) in with Chestnut Breasted Mannikins. Lots of Crimson Finches here. Also a cisticola seen here with a very pale washed out grey plumage(possible Zitting?) - noticeably different to the Golden Headed ones also present. At least 6 Brolga on the wetland along with usual collection of egrets, herons and ducks.

Wed 4 Jul Masked & White Browed Woodswallows; Common Bronzewing Upper Falls and valley, Gunlom
Saw at least 20 each of both species mixed in a big flock of woodswallows about 300 metres upstream on the right hand side (if looking upstream); approx 10am. Included adults and juveniles Also Rufous Throated and Banded Honeyeaters here (plunge bathing in stream), and a Common Bronzewing in the riverside trees but no sign of White Throated Grasswren or other sandstone specialist species when working over the rocks to the right hand side.

Tue 3 Jul Banded Fruit Pigeon Nourlangie Rock
Single bird seen high up the escarpment sitting on on a dead tree - sighted from Gunwarddehwardde lookout. Seen aprox 11 am, tree was in good shade. (Given noisy visitors to art sites, thought pigeons may have moved higher up the escarpment to the cooler side - was a good thought!) Possible Chestnut Quilled Rock Pigeon high up too but no clear view. Many Spangled Drongo in the wooded areas near the art sites.
