The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period
Monday, July 2, 2012 to Sunday, July 8, 2012:
Area: SA
Date: Monday, July 2, 2012
Location: On or near our property at Rockleigh
Restless Flycatcher (Myiagra inquieta) (1)
Rock Dove (Columba livia) (1)
Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) (1)
The rock dove (not seen here before) was sitting in the middle of the gravel
road not far from our gate, looking quite disoriented. The nearest colony we
have found in the area is 5km away. Could it have been a misplaced homing
pigeon ?
According to our book, restless flycatchers often hover, but we have not seen
this behaviour before. Our bird, detected from its characteristic 'zip', was
hovering about a metre above a reed-filled spring for a minute or so, then it
dived into the reeds, emerged (with prey ? It 'zipped' again, so maybe not) and
flew off towards a tree and we lost it. While hovering its underwings were seen
as almost white, and it made a very pretty sight.
Then whilst enjoying a glass of red with friends, at 7pm under a full moon, a
masked lapwing was heard to call a couple of times. Species 66 !
