Hi Susan,
You may leave your hire car in the secure parking at the ferry terminal.
This is almost certainly the best option since otherwise you will need to
take all your luggage to Stewart with you. And you will probably get a
better hire rate for one long period rather than 2 shorter ones.
There is a fair range of accom on Stewart, but

We normally stay in either the South Sea Hotel, or Bay Motel.

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my query. I will contact
some of them to get more info.
We will be hiring a car in Christchurch and spending 2 or 3 nights on
Stewart Island. What should we do about the car when we do this - leave it
at the ferry wharf? somewhere else? turn it in (if this is
possible) and rehire after leaving the island?
Any advice about places to stay on the island (avoiding shared bathrooms)?
