I would like to thank everyone who responded to my query.  I will  
contact some of them to get more info.
We will be hiring a car in Christchurch and spending 2 or 3 nights on  
Stewart Island.  What should we do about the car when we do this -  
leave it at the ferry wharf?  somewhere else? turn it in (if this is  
possible) and rehire after leaving the island?
Any advice about places to stay on the island (avoiding shared  
bathrooms)?
