I just went to add that email address to my address book for next time and
found it was already there, so I must have known that and forgotten.
I suppose you need to ring as well to check the conditions, but if they're
happy taking registrations by email then the SMS idea is a practical one. I do
think I could ring and leave a message much more quickly than I could type out
my name, permit number, car registration and the date of visit on a normal
mobile phone though.

The problem with registering visits by SMS is that they couldn't inform you of
road closures, etc, like they do now on the recorded message.
Registering by email might be more practical, as they could set up an
autoreply, but there's still the risk you might not read it. I guess the same
thing is possible with SMS, but harder to set up, and with the same problem.
A web form would probably fit in best with their safety requirements, but not
so convenient for those without a "smart" phone.
