Hi Folks
During a recent visit to North Sumatra, I had a chance to head into a region
called Berastagi. I did a couple of walks up around near the top of a local
active volcano called Gunung Sibayak.
I did 1 walk to the crater. Not much birding time but I saw a few. Then I
went back to the same place and spent a few more hours the following morning
up the top. Still only saw a few but it was nice to be on my own for a few
hours. I stopped at a few spots on the way back but only heard heaps and saw
little? Hard going birding up there. What was amazing was that I birded
pretty much the same stretch of road and didn't see any of the birds from
the previous day except Mountain Tailorbird?
9 lifers in all.
Here is my list:
1st trip - afternoon. Car Park to the Top.
Cream-striped Bulbul
Gray-faced Woodpecker (endemic maroon version)
House Swift
Glossy Swiftlet
Orange-spotted Bulbul
Mountain Tailorbird
Blue-masked Leafbird - brilliant
Oriental White-Eye
2nd trip - early morning. Around the car park area and a couple of km's down
the mountain.
Mountain Tailorbird
Fire-breasted Flowerpecker
Black-capped White-Eye
White-throated Fantail
Gray-chinned Minivet
Mountain Warbler
Hill Prinia
Bar-winged Flycatcher-Shrike
I am sure with more time, this could be an awesome birding location which I
have found very little on the net about. I plan to come back.
I also saw Blyth's Shrike-babbler at a cafe on the way up.
Cheers
