Hi Mick,
Yes, the bird looks interesting. Did you guys get further photos - especially
one with more light on the under primaries?
Cheers,
Nikolas

Subject: Vanuatu Petrel off Port Stephens?
Hi Dion,
I was thinking the same thing when posting the report, and was also impressed
by the 'thickness' of the dark leading edge. The bird was similar enough
however to one we had off Wollongong in January that I didn't really think too
much else about it. I've been more trying to nut-out the 'pale-bellied' petrel
we had (which will probably turn out to be a Great-winged or Solander's I'd
say).
I wonder if there were any other similar looking birds seen on the Britannia
Seamount trip recently?
Mick

Looking at the photograph on Eremaea for NSW-White-necked Petrel off Port
Stephens by Mick Roderick and crew on Sunday I was impressed by the solid
dark under primaries. If you compare it with photos of Vanuatu Petrel by
Peter Harrison and Hadoram Shirihai on an image search of Vanuatu Petrel it
is quite a serious contender.
Cheers
Dion
