Location: On our property at Rockleigh
Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) (4) The family is still at our place.
The two youngsters are adult size but can be distinguished from their parents
by the faint gold-orange collar. They spent all Sunday begging for food,
chasing their parents, and on Monday one of the parents turned the tables and
chased them in what looked like a genuine attack. We guessed that the parent
was saying "Go and find your own mice now" (mice are plentiful).
It was the day of aerial scraps. 2 little ravens attacked one of the juvenile
kites, and kept harassing it until one of the parent kites turned up. One raven
fled, and the adult kite chased the other for at least 5 minutes, flying very
close behind, in silence, while the raven tried to get away, uttering single
'kar' s every few seconds. It was very funny to watch.
A little later 3 of the kites spotted a brown falcon and decided to get it off
'their' territory, and attacked it until it fled. The aerial display rivalled
that of the Roulettes which had been flying over our house as part of the
Clipsal entertainment.
In the afternoon a loose group of about 60 little ravens flew over, being
harassed at the edges by half a dozen magpies.

Location: On our Rockleigh property
Diamond Firetail (Stagonopleura guttata) (3) A diamond firetail nest consisting
of a loose ball of dried grass stalks about 25cm diameter is perched in a gum
tree in our creek bed about 3 metres above the ground, the back of the nest
being tucked into a fork. We saw one bird fly out of the nest, another in the
nest and there was another flying around. It was impossible to see if the bird
inside the nest was a youngster or a parent, as we kept well away.

Location: Thompson Beach
Fairy Tern (Sterna nereis) (1) 32 seen, near tidal margin on south side of
Third Creek, 1800hr. One immature.
Banded Stilt (Cladorhynchus leucocephalus) (1) >3000 present, in several groups
of up to 1000 birds. Feeding area from mangrove line to wading depth on
incoming tide (1500hrs), between central and southern carpark. Predominantly
adult birds, 20-30% in breeding plumage, <5-10% immatures.
Great Knot (Calidris tenuirostris) (1) Only one identified, resting with 60
common greenshanks and one curlew sandpiper in lagoon off third creek, 1900hrs.
None found feeding among red knots and banded stilts earlier. Also, none seen
on previous visit (13/2)
1400 - 1600hrs, southern carpark: Very windy! Red knots (>1500, many showing
good colour) and banded stilts were feeding on the exposed sandflats, with some
intermingling. Red-necked stints were present in smaller than expected numbers,
closer inshore.
1830 hrs, Third Creek sandbar: 18 pied oystercatchers and approx 100 bar-tailed
godwits seen. The red knots had grouped into several very tight bunches of up
to 500 birds, to minimise wind-chill. A few hundred of the banded stilts were
still feeding, and were more approachable than earlier.
Three weeks ago (13/2), we counted >1500 banded stilts, > 1000 red knots and 80
bar-tailed godwits in the area between the southern carpark and Third Creek.

Location: SA Water reserve,Hindmarsh Tiers.
Black Falcon (Falco subniger) (1) Single bird being attacked by a
Black-shouldered Kite.Flew within about 20 metres of me before heading off to
the south.
Great spot for raptors with both Brown Goshawk and resident pair of
Wedge-tailed Eagles present.
