Birdline Victoria

Published sightings for the week ending 5 Feb 2012.

Sun 5 Feb Freckled Duck Coolart Wetlands & Homestead
Five seen on the lagoon (2 also seen on the 4/2/12 by Sue and Steve King). Also one Australian Spotted Crake on the wetlands.
Brian Thomas

Spotted Quail-thrush, Cicadabird, Turquoise Parrot Stanley State Forest (Gapsted Block)
A great morning walk through the forest with a great diversity of species. Great views of a female Spotted Quail-thrush along West End Track casually walking in front and around for a while giving great views. Also a Cicadabird and Turquoise Parrot at the end of Stoney Creek Track. This is my most southerly record for Turqs in north-east Victoria, I don't think they would occur much further south. Plenty of White-throated Needletails about as well, some so close they could be heard calling.
Michael Ramsey

Satin Flycatcher Point Cook Coastal Park
Satin Flycatcher (1). Adult male amongst cypress at the homestead.
Peter Bennet

Sat 4 Feb White-throated Needletail Emerald
The sky was alive with needletails a couple of kilometres north of Emerald. Though only a small section of sky visible, 241 WTNTs were counted.

Terry Gourley

White-breasted Woodswallow Dutson Downs, south of Sale
Three adults and a juvenile seen. An adult was observed at this site back in October, so they appear to have possibly bred there. (Moderators note: a very rare bird south of the Great Divide)
Rohan Bilney

Australian Bustard Hamilton
1 in paddock on Department of Primary Industries research farm about 10 km south of Hamilton.
Steve Clark

One immature bird looking very bittern-like on water's edge and one roosting low down in a willow tree. Four seen flying at evening - all immatures. Circa12 Spotted Crakes on shore and floating vegetation around western side of lake. Two male Blue-billed Duck and one juvenile have been here for at least a month. Up to three seen at one time. Latham's Snipe seen three times in the last week. Never seen Lake Wendouree with such abundant birdlife. Also recorded two Buff-banded Rails. We walk a part of the lake most evenings.
Campbell Vincent

Spotted Quail-thrush Mount Samaria State Park
One female foraging on Mt. Samaria Road (just a track really). On the rocky section below the Lake Nillahcootie lookout bend.
Bill Morecraft

Freckled Duck, Mallard Balbirooroo Wetlands, Balnarring
Following on from recent postings, there were 11 Freckled Duck on the main lagoon today, firstly loafing on posts in water then later retiring to shelter of willows on far side. Also there a pure-looking Mallard that appeared to be a male in eclipse, a pair of Blue-billed duck and a Black-fronted Dotterel.

Wed 1 Feb Blue-faced Honeyeater Old St Pats School, Kilmore
2 adults, 3-4 juveniles. Didn`t think they were found this far south. (Moderators note: This species has been slowly spreading south through Seymour, Broadford and now Kilmore over the last decade or so. How long till some birds establish a population in the northern suburbs of Melbourne?)
Dale Eccles

Numbers have now increased to 21.
Richard Nowotny

This is the second time a Fairy Prion has been blown inland to Hamilton, the first was fond on Coleraine Hwy in gutter in front of local Kindergarten 02/02/2006. Also identified by S. Clarke, a very handy neighbour to have.

First day back on the trains and happy to find approx. 30 Musk , 2 Rainbow and 4-5 Little Lorikeet in the gum trees on both sides of the station. All 3 species were here last February for about a month. Seems like lots of Musk Lorikeet in the outer eastern suburbs right now.
