The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period
Monday, November 21, 2011 to Sunday, November 27, 2011:
Area: SA
Date: Thursday, November 17, 2011
Location: Port Willunga on the beach northerly from the Star of the Sea about
500-1000metres along the beach
Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) (1) Four healthy chicks light brownish
sitting on the rocks while tide came in. Parents seen later in fenced off area
along the beach with signage asking dog owners to keep the dogs at water line
on a lead to protect the plovers. The locals appear to have taken ownership of
the plovers and all dog walkers complied while I was watching. Birds flew to
fenced off area when dogs were on beach.

chased of by a Red Wattlebird.

Date: Monday, November 21, 2011
Location: Beside the Murray near Overland Corner
Southern Boobook (Ninox boobook) (2) An adult, with a full-sized but very pale
and fluffy juvenile sitting close by, were perched about 10 metres off the
ground in a river red gum near the river bank.
White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica) (12) It is hard to estimate the number of
birds as we saw them singly or in pairs over 3 days, but there would have been
at least 12. One was sitting on a nest.
Black-tailed Native-hen (Gallinula ventralis) (600) Again very hard to estimate
numbers, but we saw several groups of 100 or more birds as well as many smaller
groups, on both sides of the river.
Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx basalis) (1) The cuckoo was calling on
and off very close to our camp, but was mostly silent. It was eventually
spotted in the middle of a small leafy eucalypt, very well disguised between
the green leaves and dappled light. A pair of wrens flew into the tree and
stirred it into movement, otherwise we might never have spotted it. We never
saw it out in the open.
We recorded 49 species in a day and a half, and there were another 5 or 6 birds
we could not identify as they were too far away (or failed to sit still).
Despite there being some patches of shallow water with muddy flats, where the
floods of early 2011 had receded, we did not see a single wader.

feeding busily and coming quite close. Northern side of the wetlands, southern
