Hardhead (Aythya australis) (10000) On three brackish paperbark lagoons at
McGillivray (Murrays, Birchmore, Rush). Huge influx onto KI from mainland past
few weeks.
Hoary-headed Grebe (Poliocephalus poliocephalus) (10000) On three brackish
paperbark lagoons at McGillivray (Murrays, Birchmore, Rush). Huge influx onto
KI from mainland past few weeks.
Painted Button-quail (Turnix varius) (1) West Gosse Lands section of Flinders
Chase NP. Post fire regeneration of Euc. remota mallee.
Flesh-footed Shearwater (Puffinus carneipes) (1) Beachwahed at Vivonne Bay.
Northern Giant-Petrel (Macronectes halli) (1) immature resting on Vivonne Bay
beach. Pink-tipped bill.
White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica) (1) on reedy freshwater swamp at
Birchmore-rare species on KI.
Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) (2) feeding amongst cattle on shores of Rush
Lagoon. Rarely seen on KI
Black Kite (Milvus migrans) (1) flying low over roadside mallee and pasture,
YMCA Corner on Hog Bay Road. Alongside SE corner of Pelican Lagoon. Only secong
observation for KI-first was back in 1950's!

Location: Encounter Bay.
Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) (1) A single adult standing in shallow water
on the foreshore towards the boat ramp end of the beach. Spent a long time
preening and was still there an hour later but could not be found the following
morning.

regularly from mallee areas since late July
Fan-tailed Cuckoo (Cacomantis flabelliformis) (4+) widespread and calling
regularly from all areas since late July
Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus) (4) in post fire regenerating mallee
at Remarkable Rocks
Bush Stone-curlew (Burhinus grallarius) (2) quite common and widespread on KI
but this pair first to take up residence in grassy woodland created from
plantings over past 10 years on Baxter's Panorama Park property at Wisanger.

Black-tailed Native-hen (Gallinula ventralis) (NR) Birds were running around on
the mud flats

Fairy Tern (Sterna nereis) (3) 3 Fairy Terns were part of a group of 350
Crested Terns (Sterna bergii) and 13 Caspian Terns (Sterna caspia) on a sand
bank opposite and SE to the Look Out.
Red-necked Avocet (Recurvirostra novaehollandiae) (15) Flock feeding close
together in shallow water.
Swamp Harrier (Circus approximans) (1) Flying low from the Murray Mouth inland,
probably a juvenile bird.

Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) (60) Feeding on exposed mudflats.
Red-kneed Dotterel (Erythrogonys cinctus) (2) Feeding at the water's edge and
joined sporadically by the Buff-banded Rails darting in and out of cover !
Black-tailed Native-hen (Gallinula ventralis) (10) Settling in vegetation in a
raised sand bank area.
Buff-banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) (3) Secretive birds, eventually
spotted with a telescope at some distance from them.

Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) (11) First flock I've recorded here for at
least 6 years.
Red-necked Avocet (Recurvirostra novaehollandiae) (2) Two individuals feeding
in the lagoon.Another species that hasn't been present since the drought.
Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) (3) Three birds in breeding plumage
were in the lake,about 20 metres from the shore.
Large numbers of duck species present in the lagoon at the
moment,including:Grey and Chestnut Teal (250+),Pink-Eared Duck,
Hardhead(60),Australian Shellduck,and Pacific Black Ducks.Also good to see
Glossy Ibis and Red-necked Avocet here for the first time since the drought.
