I just returned from a short trip to the Cue-Mt.Magnet area of WA, about
600km NE of Perth. The mulga is in good condition after consistent rain
all year and, unlike Frank O'Connor's experience only a month ago, birds
were quite plentiful.
Some species were particularly abundant.....small flocks of Budgerigars
were flying overhead literally every few minutes all day. Ditto
Cockatiels. Also very common were Rufous Songlark, Crimson Chat, Masked
Woodswallow and Pied Honeyeater.
I located White-browed Treecreeper near Paynes Find and Chestnut-breasted
Quail-Thrush at Kirkalocka thanks to John Graff's directions. Also Orange
Chat at Lake Austin and Banded Whiteface near Cue thanks to Frank. However
I missed out on Gilbert's Whistler at Warne River and Grey Honeyeater near
Mt. Magnet, but this last site right next to the highway (discovered by
Frank recently) had so many other birds that it didn't matter.
