Superb Fruit Doves started calling July 31 after a long period of silence at
Cassowary House, and Rose-crowned was heard Aug 4, unusually early for Kuranda.
The two Cassowaries have been mating and are still associating, it looks as if
the cold winter has delayed breeding, likewise for Golden Bowerbird on the
tablelands with no sign of activity at two bowers yesterday, let's hope they
survived cyclone Yasi!

Visitors reported Little Kingfisher along our creek, an occasional winter
visitor here, and White-headed and Topknot Pigeons are around in small numbers.

A trek up Mt Whitfield at Cairns early yesterday Aug 5 gave us a fine Red-neckd
Crake, a pair of Lovely Fairywren and 2 silent Noisy Pitta, the target bird for
my Japanese guests. Brolga and Sarus Crane together near Mareeba were also
nice, but a couple of the former and about 10 of the latter.

Good birding
