Many thanks to everyone who has reviewed photos and given feedback on the
storm-petrel we saw yesterday.
Paul Walbridge will be posting a formal Southport Pelagic report tomorrow for
yesterday's trip - which I am sure many will be looking forward to.
The feedback about the 'storm-petrel' from experienced birders from both
Australia and New Zealand is consistent and unanimous - it was a NZSP.
Obviously this is subject to a formal submission and acceptance etc. so still a
probable at this stage although it looks promising.
In the 'storm-petrel-mania' another 1st for Southport (and I think Qld) was
temporarily overlooked. We had a few classic 'gouldii' Great-winged Petrels
yesterday which are a regular off Southport (about 50% of June trips and
recorded in all seasons). While I was reviewing my photos on my camera
yesterday on the boat I mentioned to Paul that one of the 'Great-wingeds'
lacked a pale-face and on review last night I was pretty convinced that it was
a nominate 'macoptera' - on shape, jizz, wing-length, bill 'heaviness' etc.
Paul has independently come to the same conclusion - but as you can imagine we
were pre-occupied on the boat yesterday as time was ticking by! However, again,
subject to a Qld submission, we appear to have had another great bird yesterday
for Southport.
