Hi Steve,
the one that I find most useful is the Menkhorst/Knight one - A Field
Guide to the Mammals of Australia. it retails for around $45.00. Be
careful that you buy the latest edition (3rd) with a black cover as the
2nd edition is still on the shelves.
Having spoken with Peter only a week or so ago about the book, he
advised that the third edition has some updated "splits" such as
Mountain and Short-eared Brushtail Possums (Trichosurus cunninghamii and
T.caninus) and Tasmanian Long-eared and Greater Long-eared Bats.
Yours in all things "green"

The 2nd ed of Peter Menkhorst/Frank Knight is excellent. I believe
there is a 3rd ed now, but I guess Peter, who is on Birding-Aus too,
should know better.
Cheers,
Nikolas
