Black-winged Monarch
Bushy Ck bridge, base of Mt Lewis, Far Nth Qld, Queensland
At 2:45pm today, a single immature Black-winged Monarch was seen very well & photographed at Bushy Ck Bridge, below Mt Lewis, well to the south of it's accepted range. This is probably the 4th confirmed record this far south into the Wet Tropics. A rough image by Martin Cachard is attached - plenty more were taken of this bird & will be avail on request. Accompanying me when finding this bird was Dom Chaplin. We were trying to locate the calling Chestnut-breasted Cuckoos nearby, but this guy came along & we got somewhat distracted. A great find that will help us to understand the immature plumage of this species, which is apparently undescribed in Aust.

Blue and White Flycatcher
Big House on Home Island, Cocos-Keeling Islands
Richard Baxter has just rung and asked me to report on birding-aus that a
male Blue and White Flycatcher was seen easily today near the Big House on
Home Island.
It was very attached to one particular tree which it repeatedly chased a
Large Hawk Cuckoo out of, both birds viewed and photographed very well from
around twenty metres distance.
Richard mentioned that all the usual suspects were still present on the
island eg Japanese Sparrowhawk, Yellow Bittern, Pond Heron and Watercock. I
would not consider this list exhaustive and I am sure Richard will provide a
full report when he arrives home next week.

Plains wanderer
Melton, Victoria
Immature female, found in a loading dock at a Melton Shopping Centre. A security guard had been feeding it bread and milk for the last five days, thought it was something special and wanted to protect it from the large feral cat population. Now in care at Melbourne Zoo.
If it survives it will be released, not sure where yet.

Inland Dotterel, Painted Snipe
Mincha-Canary Island Road NW of Pyramid Hill, Victoria
Inland Dotterel reported to me this weekend, on private land on north side of road, c.1km east of junction with Loddon Valley Highway. Paddaock has short grass, roly-poly, and some has been ploughed. Private, so only look from road.
Along the same road, but further east betwen Ruddocks Road and Newstead Road, about one month ago, 2 Painted Snipe reported, Only recorded because of a farmer wiht a keen eye and some interest. Clearly there are many more unfound rarities out there in the quiet backblocks.

Oriental Cuckoo
Norfolk Island, Norfolk Island
on airport fence on opposite side to terminal where there is a double fence to allow cattle to graze in an enclosure, has a double gate as an entry point, sighted late afternoon on 12 & 13.3.2011 (1). one photo available in Norfolk Island Flickr set (attached)
