Birdline ACT

Published sightings for the week ending 13 Mar 2011.

Sat 12 Mar Rainbow Bee-eater Kelly's Swamp
c.30 Rainbow Bee-eaters high above Kelly's Swamp around 3.30pm, moving in a generally northerly direction. Welcome Swallows appeared to be accompanying them. Other species seen included 1 White-throated Gerygone (presumably moving through as this species is not regular or a breeder at this site, as far as I know) and an immature Little Eagle, which spent several minutes on the ground apparently feeding on small invertebrates of some sort, and then flew off carrying a large stick.

Wed 9 Mar Southern Boobook Garran
Single Boobook heard calling at 0530 and again at 2030. First record here in Garran since October 2009.

Mon 7 Mar Yellow Rosella Shepherd's Lookout
Perched with immature Crimson Rosellas in a dead callitris. It's been brought to my attention that some rosella hybrids bear remarkable resemblance to the Yellow Rosella. While I acknowledge this, my empirical knowledge of this species in the Wagga area, coupled with the fact that that my daughter read out the distinguishing field marks while I scruitinised the bird through binoculars from 25 m away, leads me to believe that I was watching a Yellow Rosella.

Sun 6 Mar Spotted Quail-thrush Mt Tennent
A pair seen in the undergrowth on the lower slopes of Mt Tennent at about 1100. Also saw one on the Camel Back trail three weeks ago, in a similar habitat.
